We're a group of five students from Roosevelt Academy enrolled in the Urban Geography course of professor Tasan-Kok. This blog is meant for our classmates and we'll regularly post about the progress of our research project here.

Research Plan

For tomorrows lecture we were supposed to have set up the official research plan. The topic of our research will be "property-led wealth creation" in the areas Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam and Eilandje in Antwerpen. We hereby present you our research plan.

What is going to be the research interest?
We want to see what the effects were of both projects on both communities. We are particularly interested in the social consequences that these projects had. In previous research it has been proved that urban regeneration has negative consequences for the lowest socio-economic class in society.  We want to see if this also happened in Eilandje and Kop van Zuid. We want to include spatial features nearby and look at to what extent they are useful to the community.

What will be your focus?
Our focus will be the consequences of large-scale property development for families in the affected areas. Both projects were meant to give areas that were well-known for criminal activities and low-income housing a boost. How did the change in property affect the population?

What general research question do you plan to answer?
The general research question:
How is the principle of property led wealth creation implemented in Rotterdam and Antwerp, and what are the outcomes of both projects?

Possible subquestions:
-          What was built?
-          What people used to live in the areas?
-          What people live their now?
-          How do the people that live there now assess their quality of life? (interviews)
To be able to compare we would like to ask people from the surrounding (non-regenerated) area as well.
